Things to know before beginning agility

We only train dog's twelve months and over as puppies younger than this are still growing, and should not jump because it puts too much stress on developing bones and joints.

Any reasonably fit, well behaved dog can take part in agility, whether your hound is a pedigree, crossbreed, rescue or heinz 57.

There are some commands that your dog should know before beginning agility such as sit, down and stay/wait. It is also vital that your dog has a good recall, is well socialized and has a good temperament. If your dog does not fit this criteria we recommend that you attend obedience classes before approaching us.

There are three different height categories in standard agility classes; Small, medium and large; and seven different grades of difficulty.

Warning, agility is seriously addictive! Many people join the club without ever intending to compete, but before long they are organising their weekends around dog shows.

Your first agility class

There are few things which will you need to bring with you to your agility class: Your dog's vaccination card (all dog's must be fully vaccinated before commencing training at Dordale ATS). Your dog's favourite tit bits and toys, some water for your dog to drink and some poo bags. Please ensure you bring a clip lead with you and that your dog is wearing a flat collar ( no choke or half choke collars).

Ideally you should wear some non slip footwear such as sports trainers or muckers, if you find that you enjoy agility you can then invest in something more specialised such as atsro turf or rugby boots. A waterproof coat is an essential, especially when we are training outdoors and, although not a necessity, a sports bra is also a good idea for any women who want to take up the sport.
